You can still have a vacation right at home when travel and lodging are cost prohibitive. That’s right, in your own backyard. Within reasonable distance to museums, historic sites, campgrounds, and beautiful state parks is where most of us live. There are things that you might find in your own local area that would come as a surprise to you.
In order to find free or low cost activities and sites to visit, do some research in your area. Try scheduling something for each day of the week even if it’s just a park visit for a picnic. There are also areas that have local public beaches. At a local public beach, you can also plan an outing. Try visiting historical sites. Many of these are free, educational, and fun for parents and kids.
Planning activities at home just as if you were at an exotic vacation spot is what you can even do. Have a different theme for each day. Here are a few examples.
Have a beach day. You can have a picnic, go sun tanning, volley ball, or make some fancy icy drinks to sip on in the sun.
How about a camp day? During this time, you can build a little fire if allowed in your area, stay in a tent or sleeping bags under the stars, roast marshmallows, make smores, and sing campfire songs.
Try having a backyard fair. Create booths with games like ring toss or balloon popping to win little prizes.
You can have a Colonial Day. How about dressing up and living in another era. A lot of fun is what this would be. You can have no lighting except candles and lanterns, no T.V. or radio, no video games or computer. You may think it’s boring, but you may be able to come up with some fun ideas in order to keep occupied.
Have a Cultural Day. Live, celebrate, dress, and eat as you learn about different cultures. There are a few examples such as Native American, Irish, or even Spanish Day. This learning experience is great. If you want to make it even more fun and interesting, then how about including some ethnic games?
Some imagination and a little work will be needed in these theme days at home but it will also be loads of fun for everyone. In the creation is where half of the fun will be so everyone should pitch in. As long as you are creative and use your imagination, then you can have a wonderful vacation right in your own backyard. You may even have more fun than actually being in another part of the world!
